Jazzed About Reading- Every student at Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School in Oakland, Calif., including the one pictured here, received an early holiday present a few weeks ago: a signed copy of This Jazz Man by Karen Ehrhardt, illustrated by R.G. Roth (Harcourt). The event was Ehrhardt's second at the school: earlier this past fall, she led workshops and read to students in an event that also featured a performance by local jazz musician Ed Reed. The author and musician became involved in the event through KatzConnects, a California-based agency that helps pair children's book authors and illustrators with events for children at schools and libraries. The books were provided by Bring Me a Book, a local nonprofit organization. |

"Dear Ms. Katz,
I just wanted to let you know how thrilled we were with our three authors you booked for Elmwood Elementary. Every Kindergarten, First grade and second grade class and their teachers were honored to have these wonderfully knowledgeable, artistic people in their presence.
The series started off with Rachel Rodriguez who entertained us all with her fabulous book Through Georgia’s Eyes and its beautiful illustrations. Everyone thought this was just the greatest to have a real life author right in front of his or her eyes. Ms. Rodriguez has the natural ability of connecting with her audience. She was awesome and the students thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Our second author was Michael Elsohn Ross who captivated the classes with his many books about bugs and his talented artistic demonstrations. He not only read and illustrated, he signed his drawings and presented them to each class. Mr. Ross shared many stories of the flora and fauna of his beloved Yosemite.
Just when I thought nothing could be better than these two exquisite authors, along came Julia and Ira Levin, singing storytellers with such personalities and a show that kept all on the edge of their seats. The students just loved them (so did the teachers). They had never been exposed to such an interactive performance and are still talking about it.
Elmwood Elementary would like to thank you, Ms. Rachel Rodriguez, Michael Elsohn Ross, Ira and Julia Levin and Mrs. Sue dePolo from San Joaquin A+ for providing us with such top-notch entertainment. This has made a lasting impression upon our Elmwood Learners. Our sincerest appreciation.
Sincerely,
Sandra Mulvihill
Assistant Principal
